CRISPY OATS COOKIES
Learn to prepare some crunchy oatmeal cookies without sugar, for the whole family, controlling the ingredients.

eggLearn how to prepare crunchy oatmeal cookies, sweetened with erythritol and flavored with vanilla essence, perfect for breakfast or snack.

Make a good batch of crunchy oatmeal cookies and store them in a box for the rest of the week.

If you have children, it is a good solution to vary the breakfasts and snacks, give them the opportunity to have cookies beyond industrial products rich in sugars and unhealthy fats.

Do you know what old-time oatmeal cookies contain? Yes, those, the ones that we have always bought and I include myself, in addition to oats, which are usually around 37% in any of the versions, wheat flour and a lot of sunflower oil and palm fat.

If only it were that, I would be half calm, now comes the best: glucose syrup, fructose and sugar.

But so that we do not doubt how good they are when buying them, their “high fiber content” is emphasized and we are told to consume them “within a varied and balanced diet, within the framework of a healthy lifestyle”.

How can there be so much cynicism printed on a cardboard container? Varied and balanced diet? The moment you consume that type of cookies, industrial pastries with all the letters, you have already loaded yourself with the supposed “varied and balanced diet ”.

Oatmeal has beneficial properties, take it in moderation, and better whole and organic.

From my point of view, oatmeal is a cereal with two faces, it has beneficial properties, but on the other hand it contains antinutrients and compounds that can harm our health, especially if it is abused, but if you do not, it will not mean any problem.

The problem is in industrial products that, by containing it, ignore the rest, emphasize its virtues (fundamentally that it contains fiber), and forget to remind you that their products are rich in refined vegetable oils, in industrial fats, which are used to lower the price of final product, and in glucose syrups, fructose and, of course, sugar.

freshly made oatmeal cookies

Why am I making this introduction, simply so that you realize that the problem is not consuming oatmeal cookies from time to time, the fundamental problem is consuming industrial oatmeal cookies, if you want cookies, make them yourself and control the ingredients .

Years go by and it seems that the food industry is interested in showing that it cares about our health, there is a lot of 0% printed on the packaging and many phrases such as "remember to lead a healthy lifestyle", "do sports", etc. .

Avoid industrial cookies, avoid unhealthy fats and glucose and fructose syrups, they do not add anything, they only predispose to inflammation and disease.

But the reality is that they continue to offer the usual unhealthy or unhealthy products, they want us to consume them now thinking they are good, they have done a facelift and they pretend that we believe that things have changed.

Well, they have not changed, you just have to review the figures for childhood obesity in Spain, here is the link to the 2019 ENPE study, published by the Spanish Journal of Cardiology: Prevalence of overweight, obesity and abdominal obesity in the Spanish population between 3 and 24 years of age. ENPE study

The data speak for themselves, and as the author, Dr. Javier Aranceta-Bartrina says:

Overweight and obesity at an early age pose a risk of premature development of alterations in the homeostasis of blood pressure, blood glucose levels and plasma lipids, among other parameters. It causes joint overload, disorders of body image and social relationships or the possibility of participating with some comfort in non-sedentary sports or recreational activities.

That is why it is essential that we take action on the matter, our health and that of our children is at stake.

crunchy oatmeal cookie detail

I still do not see that there is a collective conscience regarding the danger of feeding children with an excess of sugar in the diet, I think that it is not given the importance it has.

I recommend that you start with small changes that are going to be an improvement and that you gradually progress until they decide to do without certain products.

We are human beings and we are capable of adapting, we easily get used to everything, to the good and the bad, why not try it?

Make sugar-free crunchy oatmeal cookies at home and control the ingredients.

Ingredients to make these crunchy oatmeal cookies:

Oatmeal in soft flakes, coconut flour, erythritol, egg, vanilla essence and water or vegetable milk. It's only 6 ingredients! and they can be easily memorized, come on, when you get used to it you won't have to look at the recipe, they will come out on their own.

I usually buy whole grain oat flakes and grind them at home with the food processor, if you prefer to buy oatmeal, you save that step, but it is always better to buy the least processed ingredients.

I do usually buy coconut flour already made, to make it at home you need coconut with a low percentage of humidity, it can be made with grated coconut that is quite dry.

The two flours are mixed, the sweetener is added (I usually use erythritol) and it is mixed very well. On the other hand, you have to mix all the wet ingredients, beat the egg, add the vanilla essence and the vegetable milk (or water).

Mix everything and knead, make a ball and then balls, put them on a baking tray on a parchment paper, put another paper on top and crush with another tray, press well so that the cookies are thin.

Bake at 180 ° C for 18-20 min. Do not stop watching so they do not burn, let cool on a rack.

I like the emphasis you make regarding the abuse of processed sugars and the healthy options you give! I think it is very important to take care of the little ones from the great addiction that sugar supposes. I'm also a bit of a freak about doing things myself and avoiding everything preserved as much as possible... Except for the preserves that I make in a bain-marie! Haha excellent post and well documented!

    • Thank you very much Cristina, the truth is that feeding children seems fundamental to me, creating good habits in them is very important and we have to gradually find a way to achieve it. Cooking at home is a good way to offer them more nutritious and healthy food without stopping them from enjoying themselves as children.
      Cheers! 😉
