Sugar-Free Pumpkin Spice Latte: A Healthier Take on a Fall Favorite
The Pumpkin Spice Latte (PSL) is a beloved drink, especially during the autumn months. If you’re someone who enjoys the flavors of fall, this creamy, spiced beverage made with pumpkin puree is the perfect treat.
And the best part? You can make it sugar-free and customize it to your preferences.
If you’ve ever tasted a PSL, you know it’s more than just a regular coffee with milk.
It combines the richness of espresso with the warmth of pumpkin and a signature blend of spices that evoke the cozy feelings of fall.
In this post, I’ll show you how to prepare a homemade sugar-free version of this autumn classic, so you can enjoy it without the guilt.
What is Pumpkin Spice Latte?
A Pumpkin Spice Latte is a popular drink typically made with brewed coffee, steamed milk, pumpkin puree, and a mix of spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves.
It’s a comforting drink that combines the warmth of coffee with the sweet, slightly savory flavor of pumpkin and the aromatic spices that make it uniquely fall-inspired.
In the U.S., Pumpkin Spice Lattes have become a staple of the fall season, often appearing in cafes as early as August.
The popularity of pumpkin-themed food and drinks is hard to ignore during this time, with pumpkin puree showing up in everything from desserts to soups.
While pumpkin spice lattes are delicious, they often come with a high sugar content.
The good news is that you can make a healthier, sugar-free version at home using simple ingredients and natural sweeteners like erythritol, monk fruit, or stevia.
To prepare a good pumpkin spice coffee, the spice mix is essential.
The Health Benefits of Pumpkin and Spices
Before diving into the recipe, let’s talk about the nutritional benefits of pumpkin and the spices used in a Pumpkin Spice Latte. Pumpkin is a nutrient-dense food, rich in vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants.
It is especially high in vitamin A, which supports eye health and immunity.
Pumpkin also contains a good amount of vitamin C, potassium, and magnesium, making it a heart-healthy choice.
The spices that give the Pumpkin Spice Latte its signature flavor, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves, are also packed with health benefits.
- Cinnamon: Known for its ability to help regulate blood sugar levels and reduce inflammation, cinnamon is a fantastic addition to any autumn recipe. It also has antimicrobial properties that can aid in digestion.
- Ginger: This spice has long been used for its anti-inflammatory properties. It also helps with digestion and can alleviate nausea.
- Nutmeg: Nutmeg has antioxidants that may promote brain health and help reduce oxidative stress in the body.
- Cloves: Cloves are rich in eugenol, a compound with potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
When combined, these spices not only make your Pumpkin Spice Latte taste amazing but also provide a boost of health benefits.
Why Make a Sugar-Free Pumpkin Spice Latte?
Many store-bought Pumpkin Spice Lattes contain high amounts of sugar, which can cause blood sugar spikes and contribute to weight gain if consumed frequently.
By making your own version at home, you have control over the ingredients and can create a sugar-free, low-calorie version that still satisfies your fall cravings.
Moreover, using natural sweeteners like erythritol or monk fruit ensures you’re not consuming artificial additives, and you can adjust the sweetness to your liking.
Erythritol, for example, is a popular low-calorie sweetener that doesn’t impact blood sugar levels, making it a safe choice for people with diabetes or those on a low-carb diet.

How to Make a Sugar-Free Pumpkin Spice Latte at Home
Making a Pumpkin Spice Latte at home is simple, and it’s a great way to enjoy this fall favorite without the extra sugar and calories. Here’s how you can make your own:
Ingredients:
- 2 cups pumpkin puree (homemade or store-bought)
- 1 cup whole milk (or plant-based milk of your choice)
- 1 cup coffee (espresso, brewed coffee, or a coffee alternative)
- 1/2 teaspoon of pumpkin spice mix (cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves)
- 2 tablespoons sweetener (erythritol, monk fruit, stevia, or a mix of these)
- 2 tablespoons frothed milk (optional, for a creamy top)
- A pinch of ground cinnamon (for garnish)
Instructions:
- Prepare the Pumpkin Puree: If you’re using fresh pumpkin, peel, cube, and cook the pumpkin in a pot with a little water and a cinnamon stick. After 25-30 minutes, mash or blend the pumpkin into a smooth puree.
- Make the Coffee: Brew a cup of your preferred coffee. You can use espresso, filtered coffee, or even a decaf option.
- Prepare the Pumpkin Spice Mixture: In a saucepan, heat the pumpkin puree with the milk, pumpkin spice mix, and sweetener. Stir well and allow it to warm over low heat, being careful not to boil it.
- Froth the Milk: While the pumpkin and milk mixture is warming, froth the remaining milk with a milk frother or by shaking it in a jar. This step is optional but will give your PSL a nice creamy top.
- Assemble the Latte: In a mug, pour the brewed coffee, then add the pumpkin-spice mixture. Top it with frothed milk and a sprinkle of ground cinnamon for garnish.
Customize your latte to your sweetness preference with natural sweeteners like erythritol or monk fruit.
Tips for a Perfect Pumpkin Spice Latte:
- Customize the sweetness: If you prefer your drink sweeter, add more sweetener. Start with a small amount and adjust to your taste.
- Use plant-based milk: You can replace regular milk with almond, oat, or coconut milk for a dairy-free version.
- Make a larger batch of pumpkin spice mix: Mix cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves in bulk and store it in a jar for future use.
