EASY CHICKEN SHAWARMA
Chicken shawarma is an easy recipe that you can make at home in a conventional oven. Whether you know what a shawarma is or not, I advise you to keep reading.
For those who don’t know what I’m talking about, shawarma is a way of cooking meat, which consists of rotating it on an axis.
The meat is marinated with a combination of spices, skewered on a stick or needle, and placed on a spit to grill while it turns. Sounds familiar, right?
Here we know this technique as Kebab, and it refers to exactly the same thing. Kebab comes from Turkish and is the term that has become most popular in the West, thanks to the proliferation of fast food establishments that sell it.
The term Shawarma ( unneling ) is Arabic and refers to the same thing, spiced beef, chicken or lamb that is inserted into a stick and cooked while it spins, then it is cut and eaten accompanied by flatbread, vegetables and a yogurt-based sauce.
There is a Greek recipe called Gyros that is very similar, once again the meat is cooked on an axis in turns, but in this case pork can also be used, it is seasoned with Mediterranean herbs and vegetables.
Shawarma and Kebab refer to the same recipe, Gyros is its Greek version.
The homemade version that I prepare of this recipe is a chicken Shawarma, which could also be made with beef or lamb.
I use a delicious combination of spices to marinate the meat, assemble the shawarma in an unconventional way using a skewer, cook it in the oven and serve it with tomato, cucumber, onion, and a delicious yogurt and garlic sauce.
You can have it with corn or wheat tortillas, or homemade “low carb” tortillas, a great option is to have it on lettuce leaves, the sauce will make all the ingredients integrate forming a delicious whole.
Each bite is a true wonder, if you like to enjoy and eat healthy at the same time, this recipe is for you.
In addition, it goes very well with pickles such as gherkins, chilies, red onion, etc.
The best option is to prepare several shawarmas at the same time, you can make one with chicken, another with beef, and another with lamb, that way you turn on the oven and get much more out of it, you can save the leftovers for another day and they will solve any lunch or dinner.
As I was saying, it can be accompanied by wheat or corn tortillas, pita bread or simply use lettuce or endive leaves, it is also delicious and it is a much more light.
Serve the shawarma with flatbread or on lettuce leaves for a lighter, low-carb version.
The truth is that every time I prepare this recipe it is a success, it does not matter if it is for the family or if guests are coming, the shawarma triumphs because it is a delight, because it is different and because each one combines it with what they like the most, so it never fails.
These types of recipes give an informal touch to dinners with friends, they give rise to conversations about spices, about flavors, about how to prepare them and that is always good.
Do you want to see how it is done? Below I leave you a video, it lasts only 1 minute and it is designed precisely so that it is not long and tedious, I have edited it so that you can see how easy it is to make a homemade shawarma without complicating things.
I leave you the recipe with all the details below.
